Collection: Mestur

Mestûr revives forgotten words from Kâmus-ı Türkî, Şemseddin Sami’s Ottoman Turkish dictionary published in 1901. Each work is created on an original 125-year-old dictionary page: I read the page, select one word that has faded from everyday language, and rewrite it by hand in colored Iranian ink.

The title carries a double meaning: mestûr means hidden or concealed, while mastûr means written or inscribed. Each piece brings a forgotten word from one state into the other — from hidden to written, from memory to presence.

Every Mestûr artwork is one of one, made on its original historical page, signed and numbered as part of the collection. No two works can ever be repeated.
